Mercedes have come out to explain
more about the situation in the pit lane that led Hamilton to being penalized in
the Italian Grand Prix at Monza on Sunday.
With the dramatic race being won by
AlphaTauri’s Pierre Gasly, Hamilton dropped from first position to the back of
the field through a ten seconds stop and go penalty for entering a pit lane
when it was already close after Kevin Magnussen broke down. He started lap 29
in the 17 place but had to fight for recovery to finish the final 24 laps by
gaining 10 positions over.
“The decisions that were taken were
highly unusual, but they were absolutely within the rules. With Lewis and the
penalty, it was a weird sequence of events. We should have spotted earlier that
the pit was closed, by the time that we did, the car was entering the pit lane,”
Mercedes boss Toto Wolff said.
The pit lane was closed by race
control at 15:41:47 but car 44 [Hamilton] entered the pit lane at 15:41:59. The
Brit has said he and the team would from the error that cost them dearly.
Hamilton wasn’t the only one penalized
as Alfa Romeo’s Antonio Giovinazzi was also penalized for the same offence.
