The 22-year old Naomi Osaka came
out on top after a tough battle with Belarus Victoria Azarenka in the US Open
WTA finals. Osaka fought back from a set down to win her second US Open title
and third Grand Slam.
Osaka and Azarenka were meant to
face each other for a fourth time in the final of the Western and Southern Open
but an injury forced Osaka to withdraw from the game with a hamstring injury. Fortunately,
both met again at Flushing Meadows but this time, in the US Open final with
both seeking to gain dominance over the other.
A nervous and error prone Osaka trailed
to her counterpart in the first set. But a resurgent Osaka blew away the relentless
Azarenka as she faded away in the second and third sets.
The Japanese star is now the first
Asian player to win three major titles breaking Chinese Li Na record. She also
added a whooping 2.3m pounds to her fortune as she remains the highest earning
female tennis player.
