Martin Braithwaite has refuted
claims that he requested to have Barcelona no. 10 shirt should Lionel Messi
leave the Spanish giants. A report from Spain claimed Braithwaite brought up
the idea of taking the iconic jersey.
But speaking with the Danish
newspaper BT, Braithwaite said he made no such demands and called the
suggestion ‘disrespectful’.
“What do people think themselves?
Of course I did not go to the club and ask for Messi’s number. It would be so
disrespectful. I really feel that the people who come up with these kind of
stories lack respect for a lot of people. A lot of things are being written
about Messi and I do not know what is happening. I can only say that he is a
great player and person to be teammates with.”
With Messi having informed
Barcelona of his desire to leave the club, Braithwaite is more certain about
his own future having signed a deal till 2024 when he was signed from Leganes
in January.
“I have a contract for four more
years with Barcelona. I am having a great time at the club and they are happy
with me, it seems, so I have a really good sense of where I am. I have not had
any talks about changing clubs with anyone at all. I am just thinking about how
to prepare to play well for Barcelona next season,” he added.
