Hammas Wants To Keep The Identity Of It’s New Leader To Prevent The Possibility Of Another Assassination

Hamas intends to maintain the confidentiality of its new leader's identity in order to prevent the possibility of another assassination following the death of Yahya Sinwar.

Hamas intends to keep the identity of its new leader confidential to prevent another assassination following the death of Yahya Sinwar, who orchestrated the events of October 7.

A representative of the organization informed the BBC that a new leader will be appointed in March 2025; in the interim, governance will be managed by a five-member committee.

This committee, which will operate in lieu of a single leader, will consist of Khalil al-Hayya, Khaled Meshaal, Zaher Jabarin, Muhammad Darwish, who heads the Shura Council, and a fifth member whose identity has not been revealed.

The unnamed representative conveyed to the broadcaster that Hamas is deeply concerned about the circumstances surrounding Sinwar's assassination, as they believed he was in a more secure environment at the time of his death.

Additionally, he stated that the organization possesses the necessary resources and personnel to ensure their security.

The official also mentioned that the Iranian foreign minister met with Khalil al-Hayya in Ankara on Friday to express condolences for Sinwar's martyrdom.

Sinwar was eliminated on Wednesday following an extensive pursuit by intelligence agencies and the Israeli Defence Forces that lasted over a year.

Israeli officials have reported that the leader of Hamas, often referred to as the Butcher of Khan Younis, was killed after he surfaced from the underground tunnel system where he had been concealing himself.

On Wednesday morning, a unit from the IDF's 828th Bislamach Brigade was conducting a patrol in Tal al-Sultan, a neighborhood in Rafah, when they encountered a group of three Hamas militants on the street and engaged them in combat.

According to the IDF, the terrorists were "on the run," moving from one house to another.

One of the individuals, later identified as Sinwar, "ran alone into one of the buildings." He ascended to the second floor, prompting the troops to respond by firing a tank shell in his direction.

A unit composed of trainee infantry commanders and reservists commenced a search of the area, as reported by Israeli media.

According to Ynet, two grenades were launched at them; one detonated while the other did not activate.

The soldiers assessed the situation as too perilous to continue and retreated, deploying a mini drone to track the escaping fighter instead.

Dramatic footage released by the IDF captures the bloodied Sinwar, his face obscured by a scarf, making a desperate attempt to defend himself against the drone by throwing a stick just moments before he was killed.
