Shettima halts his journey to Samoa after a 'foreign object' strikes his aircraft

Vice President Kashim Shettima has canceled his participation in the 2024 Commonwealth Heads of Government Summit in Samoa.

President Tinubu had appointed Shettima to serve as Nigeria's representative at the ongoing summit.

The cancellation occurred after a foreign object struck his aircraft during a layover at JFK Airport in New York, as disclosed by the Presidency in a statement released on the evening of October 24.

The statement, issued by Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr. Bayo Onanuga, is titled ‘Cockpit windscreen of VP Shettima’s plane damaged at JFK airport, ministerial delegation to represent Nigeria at Samoa Commonwealth summit.’

“Vice President Kashim Shettima’s journey to Samoa for the 2024 Commonwealth Heads of Government Summit has been called off due to a foreign object impacting his plane during a stop at JFK Airport in New York,” Onanuga noted.

“The foreign object caused damage to the cockpit windscreen of the aircraft.

“President Tinubu has swiftly authorized a ministerial delegation to represent Nigeria at the summit in Apia, the capital of Samoa, while repairs on the aircraft are underway.

"The delegation, now tasked with representing Nigeria at the 2024 Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Samoa, will be led by the Minister of Environment, Balarabe Lawal.

The summit commenced on the Pacific island on October 21 and is scheduled to conclude on October 26.
