3000m steeplechase champion, Kipruto, tests positive for COVID-19

Conseslus Kipruto

Kenya’s Conseslus Kipruto is set to miss the opening Diamond League meeting in Monaco after the result of his test came out positive.

Kipruto, whose personal best is 8mins 0.12secs, said he was in great shape ahead of the event and had set a target of breaking the world record of 7mins 53.63secs held by Saif Saaeed Shaheen.

Confirming the news, the 25 year old said, “Our world is going through a challenging period and we all have to take our responsibilities. Unfortunately, my COVID-19 test, as part of the Monaco-protocol, came back positive and therefore I can’t be part of the Monaco Diamond League on Aug. 14. I don’t have any symptoms and I was actually in great shape. I was planning to go for the world record. It has stayed too long outside Kenya. As the World and Olympic champion, I feel strongly it’s something I should go for as well… wish them and my colleagues a wonderful competition.”

The Monaco Diamond League meeting will be followed by events in Stockholm, Lausanne, Brussels, Rome/Naples, Doha and a not yet known location in China.
