Dominic Thiem fought back from a
two sets down to win the men’s US Open on Sunday. His win over Zverev is his
maiden Grand Slam. He joins Thomas Muster as the only Austrian to win a major
title.
Thiem has lost all three of his
previous Grand Slam finals, twice against Nadal and once against Novak Djokovic
in the Australian Open earlier this year. He got over the line finally in
Flushing Meadows. He became the first player to win the US Open title from two
sets down since Pancho Gonzalez in 1949 and also the first player to capture a
Grand Slam title from two sets down since Gaston Gaudio in 2004.
The 23-year old Zverev gave his
counterpart a tough fight. Having struggled to find his best form yet in the US
Open tournament, Zverev wanted to revenge for losing out to Dominic Thiem in
the semifinals of the Australian Open earlier this year. He proved dominant in
the first two sets till Thiem bounced back aggressively.
A jubilant Thiem slumped to the
court in celebration and exhaustion before proceeding to congratulate his
opponent.
