Tony Elumelu Launches Initiative to Provide $5,000 Seed Capital to Young African Entrepreneurs.
Tony Elumelu, a prominent proponent of Africapitalism and the creator of the Tony Elumelu Foundation, announced a ground-breaking program to provide $5,000 in seed financing to young African entrepreneurs during the Future Investment Initiative New Africa Summit in Saudi Arabia. The program offers young business leaders financial support and mentorship in an effort to alleviate Africa's high unemployment rates and infrastructure deficiencies.
While finance is important, Elumelu stressed that a more comprehensive strategy is necessary for long-term economic growth. "We want to build successful businesses that support economic growth and job creation by providing young entrepreneurs with both capital and business training," he said. The strategy used by his charity has already helped 20,000 young business owners throughout the continent, creating almost 400,000 direct and indirect jobs. But in order to genuinely change Africa's economic situation, Elumelu emphasised the significance of tackling more significant systemic problems, such access to power, tax reform, and advantageous policies. In order to create an environment that is conducive to entrepreneurship, he advocated for smart public-private collaborations.
