Lewis Hamilton has said he never
thought he would ever be in the position to match Michael Schumacher’s record
of F1 victories. The Brit won the Tuscan Grand Prix on Sunday at Mugello to
stand just one victory short of Schumacher’s 91.
“It just doesn’t seem real. It’s
ultimately a privilege to be in a position and have such a great team and a car
to be able to deliver weekend in, weekend out but I just feel forever grateful
to the people that continue to work hard, I’m just a link in the chain. But I never
thought that I would be here, that’s for sure,” Hamilton said.
With Mercedes dominance this
season, it is inevitable that Hamilton will match with Schumacher and possibly
stretch the record. He is also in pole to break Schumacher’s record of seven
drivers’ titles. Hamilton has six to his name.
He is 55 points ahead of Valterri
Bottas and 80 points clear of Max Verstappen in the F1 2020 standings.
