Koeman hints at formation change after Barca friendly win

Barcelona manager Ronald Koeman has hinted that his squad will see a change in their formation rather than the traditional 4-3-3 the club is known for. He made the statement after Barca saw off Gimnastic de Tarraggona in a 3-1 friendly win.

“It is perhaps a little different and more defensive to what we have seen in the last few years. But the aim is to move the ball, hold on to it and create space to play between the lines, behind the opponents’ midfielders. I think this team is capable of doing this because we have midfielders who are able to play in that way,” he said after the game.

The 4-3-3 formation has been a household name amongst the Catalan club since Frank Rijkaard. Rijkaard, Guardiola and Enrique have all used that system to achieve success for the club, winning major trophies.

Explaining further his reasons to enforce this new system, Koeman said, “The midfield system is a little different to previous seasons but the team has the quality to do that and do it well. We are looking to move the ball much quicker high up the pitch to break the lines [of opponents], to create space and generate more dangerous situations so the team scores goals.

Barcelona would face Girona in a friendly game on Wednesday.
